The 8th Ibero-American Seminar, “The Situation of Spanish in China,” was held from February 17 to 20 of this year, 2025. The objective of this international seminar was to present in Bangladesh the vision, current situation, and widespread diffusion of the Spanish language in the People's Republic of China, as well as to depict the principal areas of philological research conducted by Chinese Hispanists and Spanish Sinologists.
The 8th Ibero-American Seminar, “The Situation of Spanish in China,” was held from February 17 to 20 of this year, 2025. The objective of this international seminar was to present in Bangladesh the vision, current situation, and widespread diffusion of the Spanish language in the People's Republic of China, as well as to depict the principal areas of philological research conducted by Chinese Hispanists and Spanish Sinologists.
In order to accomplish the objective, Professor Santiago Fernández Mosquera, director of the Seminar, invited Professor Alicia Relinque Eleta from the University of Granada and Ms. Isabel Cervera, director of the Cervantes Institute in Beijing, to the University of Dhaka. Representing the Chinese Hispanists at the Inditex Chair of the University of Dhaka were Professors Yu Man and Jingsheng Lu, as well as Ming Yang from Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), Professors Tian Xia (Yunnan Normal University) and Nina Ya-hui Chang (Wuhan University), and Professor Cao Wei (Xi’an International Studies University). Together, they outlined a comprehensive overview of Spanish studies in China—from its inception and the early translations of Spanish literary works at the beginning of the 20th century to the current situation of linguistic and philological studies, as well as the recent incorporation of Spanish language in the secondary school curriculum.
The Seminar was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Dhaka, Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, accompanied by Pro Vice Chancellor Ms. Sayema Haque Bidisha and the Director of the Institute of Modern Languages, Mr. Absar Kamal. On the Spanish side, the opening ceremony of the Seminar was attended by His Excellency Ambassador Mr. Gabriel Sistiaga Ochoa de Chinchetru and the Director of the Chair and the Seminar, Professor Santiago Fernández Mosquera.
